Hardware is the physical components which make up a computer, these include such things as the processor, motherboard, memory and storage devices such as hard drives.  It is good to protect your hardware from damage which can be caused by power surges, or cuts.

What can I do to protect my computer from power loss?

Firstly to distinguish a UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) from a surge protector. A surge protector will not stop you computer from shutting down in an uncontrolled manner, it just smoothes fluctuations in current. A UPS on the other hand is a more expensive piece of kit which has a battery in it which keeps your computer up and running for a short period of time in the event of a power cut.
